THE PROFILE

Music Junkie

SO TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
What up, name is Christopher Charles Pereira, also known as DECIPHER or CCPereira. Old enough to be married but young enough to still buy toys and sneakers! And born and raised in LABUAN!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVE WITH BEING A RECORDING/PRODUCING?
I’ve been officially involed in the recording, mixing, producing scene relatively new. Since 2004. Well that’s officially. You really wanna count? Since 1998 when i got my Diploma in Audio Engineering.

Guitar Tuning

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRAION?
Mostly from other producers, recording engineers, mixers... such as: Producer,Rick Rubin - works with everyone from Rock to Rap Recording Engineers - those that don’t follow the book word for word! Mixers, Andy Wallace - I STUDY HIM! Credits from SOAD to Linkin Park!

HOW MANY LOCAL ARTISTS HAVE YOU WORKED WITH?
Err... this includes either recording, mixing, producing/coproducing, featuring and tapau roti kosong.

Kinabalu Kingz, Richado Tawith, Jonathan Tse, Esther, Roger Wang, San Damiano Choir, A Christmas Album, Arah Kiri, Sasuka, Jiaja, Mantak, The Killer Tomatoes, The FrontMan Company, Classic Amp, Locust DayDream, Digital Licks, Max, Lydia Kalidin, Soul Chamber, Jin Hackman(KL), PAM (Sabah Chapter) Remix... and a few more here and there.

(.....) oh wow.. o_O”

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASSIGNMENT YOU EVER HAD?
Jiaja's Album! That was an experiance! And i loved it! From the “raw” method of recording to tracking(recording) the instruments in 3 different studios during the whole process! And mixing!

I learnt soooo much from the arguments and disagreements with the band to talking about tone and feel to redoing parts like a 1 bar intro. It was the best session I’ve had! I can go on and on and on about it!

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THE MUSIC SCENES IN KOTA KINABALU? (honestly..)
Honestly? They need to spend more! For real. For example... its unrealistic to think that you can record your vocals for a song in an hour.

The best of the best would normally average 2 hours. Why? Don't rush it. It needs to sound right. It has to fit the song. Changes will be made when your singing, certain words, the flow of the melody... its music, its organic. It GROWS. But... the music scene is waking up. Bands realise that they can get on radio. They can be on the Charts!

They can make music and other people will listen! They just have to invest time in their music... let it grow.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THOSE ASPIRING TO BE LIKE YOU?
Do not stop. Especially if you think you’ve reached your best. There is always someone else itching to take your spot.

Keep learning and growing and moving! And for newbie/rookie musicians... Your parents/girlfriend/bestfriend/uncle/aunty/sister/neighbour are not the people to ask to review your music. Look for other musicians from your scene better yet other scene. Post it online.

Let people you DON’T KNOW tell you if it sucks or if it blew their socks off. Listen to the wrongs people tell you, the good stuff they say?

Those are just bonus words you listen to but don’t hang on.

P.S.: If you wanna record and album/single do a remix or just talk about music tech dan segala yang sewaktu dengannya. Call call la geng. Peace One!
